The International Etchells Class, as its members would expect, is doing its due diligence on the recent rumors that there have been keel and hull alterations made contrary to Class Rules.
Under the direction of the IGC and ODT, measurers have been and are being dispatched to inspect some of the most competitive Etchells all over the world. By invitation, we have begun with the most competitive--the 2003 World Champion. I can happily confirm that the boat passed a very thorough measurement and inspection. Ken Read, his boat and crew will soon be on their way to Florida to compete in the Jaguar Midwinter Championship. Other boats are in the process of being measured. We expect to have those results soon.
The Class can remain proud of the fact that the concept of One Design is well protected by the OD rules as written. We have, through this exercise, developed some new measurement techniques which will, in future, be part of the standard measurement process. So that there may be no doubt that all boats competing in the future are ‘Class Legal’, we will continue to be diligent and sanctioned events will have the more stringent measurement processes in place to insure that our One Design Rules continue to be upheld.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year with plenty of lively surfing and planing sessions.
All the best,
Tim
